Steps to study in Netherlands
Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need to study in the Netherlands?
For 2026, the IND requires students at a university or university of applied sciences to have EUR 1,130.77 per month for living costs. Tuition is extra: Study in NL gives average non-EU fees of EUR 9,000-20,000 a year for bachelor's and EUR 12,000-30,000 for master's programmes.
Can I work while studying in the Netherlands?
Yes, but your employer needs a work permit (TWV) for you. With it you can work up to 16 hours per week during the year, or full-time in June, July and August. Once you take a job, Dutch public health insurance becomes mandatory.
Do I apply for the Dutch student visa myself?
No. Only your Dutch educational institution can apply for the student residence permit, and the MVV entry visa where needed, on your behalf. After the IND approves it, your institution informs you and you collect the MVV at the embassy or consulate.
Can I stay in the Netherlands after graduation?
Yes. Non-EU graduates who completed their studies in the Netherlands within the past 3 years can apply for the orientation year residence permit. It is valid for one year and lets you look for work as a knowledge migrant or start a business.
