Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS)

The University of Amsterdam's merit scholarship for outstanding students with a non-EU/EEA passport who apply for a Master's programme. It replaced the former Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship, and each faculty sets its own number of awards, amount and deadline.

Deadline: Deadlines differ per faculty; for example, the Faculty of Science deadline is 15 January for September 2027 entry.

What it covers

  • Grant amount set by each faculty (for example, the Faculty of Science offers one AMS of €26,125 for September 2027, paid in monthly instalments)

Who can apply

Pakistani students are eligible as non-EU/EEA passport holders.

  • You hold a non-EU/EEA passport and are not eligible for Dutch student finance or the reduced EEA tuition rate.
  • You have applied for a UvA degree programme (Master's) and will be admitted for the first time.
  • You do not receive another full-coverage scholarship for the same period.
  • You meet the faculty's academic criteria; the Faculty of Science, for example, looks for students in the top 10% of their class (around a 3.5/4 GPA).

At some faculties the AMS is a grant, not a fee waiver, so you still pay the full tuition fee.

How to apply

  1. Choose a Master's programme and read the AMS page of its faculty or graduate school.
  2. Submit a complete application for the programme.
  3. Tick the box asking to be considered for a UvA scholarship and add any documents the faculty requires.
  4. Meet the faculty's deadline (e.g. 15 January for the Faculty of Science).
  5. Faculties select in spring and inform applicants, typically in April.
