Steps to study in Malaysia
Frequently asked questions
Can I work while studying in Malaysia?
Yes, but only part-time: up to 20 hours a week during semester breaks or holidays longer than 7 days, in restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets and hotels. Prior Immigration Department approval is needed, applied for through your institution. Students cannot work as cashiers, and certain hotel roles are not allowed.
Can I stay in Malaysia after graduation?
Yes. The Graduate Pass allows international graduates to stay in Malaysia for 12 months after graduation and work in permitted sectors without needing an employer to sponsor them. Dependants can also be brought along under this pass. Applications are made through EMGS.
Can my family join me in Malaysia?
Postgraduate students can apply for Dependant Passes for immediate family members. Bachelor's students can apply only if they are citizens of a listed group of countries, which does not include Pakistan. So Pakistani undergraduates generally cannot bring dependants, while master's and PhD students can apply.
How long does the Malaysian student visa take?
EMGS's client charter is 14 working days for a complete Student Pass application, though incomplete or incorrect documents can add time. Once approved you receive an eVAL, valid for six months, and you must not enter Malaysia until it has been issued.
