A full scholarship from Universiti Malaya to attract outstanding local and international candidates to a PhD by Research. Applications are open all year, with two selection cycles tied to the October and February intakes.

Who can apply

Open to outstanding local and international candidates, so Pakistani applicants can apply.

  • You must be applying for a PhD by Research at Universiti Malaya.
  • Candidates should have an excellent academic record and research potential, as judged by UM.
  • Full criteria and benefits are in the UM Bright Scholarship brochure on the official page.

UM also offers the Universiti Malaya Scholarship Scheme (UMSS) for postgraduate research students appointed as Graduate Research Assistants, and a PTE x Universiti Malaya Scholarship giving international students GBP 3,000 towards tuition (deadline 31 December 2026).

How to apply

  1. Find a PhD by Research programme and potential supervisor at UM.
  2. Apply for PhD admission and the Bright Scholarship as the official brochure directs.
  3. Apply by the end of April for the October intake or by the end of September for the February intake.
  4. Read the Bright Scholarship brochure on the official page for the full criteria and steps.
  5. Contact UM's Sponsorship and Scholarship Centre if anything is unclear.
