UQ's main research scholarships cover tuition, a tax-free living stipend and health cover for PhD and MPhil students. International applicants have a dedicated round each year, which you enter by submitting an expression of interest.

What it covers

  • Tuition fees
  • Living stipend of AUD 39,220 per year, tax-free (2026 rate), indexed annually
  • Single Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
  • Duration of 3.5 years, with a possible extension

Who can apply

Open to domestic and international students, including Pakistanis.

  • You must be nominated by an enrolling UQ school or institute.
  • You must meet all admission conditions for a PhD, MPhil or research-focused professional doctorate.
  • You need a supervisor who supports your expression of interest.
  • Selection considers academic performance, research capability, project quality, research environment and advisory team.
  • The international round (for starting in Research Quarter 4, 2027 or early 2028) is only for international applicants; other rounds are for domestic and onshore international students.

How to apply

  1. Check your eligibility for a PhD or MPhil and find a UQ supervisor.
  2. Submit an expression of interest (EOI); in the Scholarship section, answer 'No' to advertised project and non-UQ scholarship.
  3. If your supervisor supports it, submit the full application with all documents by 19 October 2026.
  4. Shortlisting outcomes come on 18 November 2026; final outcomes from 22 February 2027.
