The Melbourne Research Scholarship and Research Training Program scholarships support high-achieving domestic and international students in Masters by Research and PhD degrees. Applicants are considered automatically when they apply for a graduate research course. Awards with a stipend include a full fee offset and a living allowance.

What it covers

  • Full fee offset (up to 2 years for Masters by Research, up to 4 years for a doctorate)
  • Living allowance of AUD 41,100 per year (2027 full-time rate), up to 2 years (Masters) or 3.5 years (PhD)
  • Relocation grant of AUD 3,000 for students moving from outside Australia
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (single) for international students on a student visa

Who can apply

Open to domestic and international students, including Pakistanis.

  • You must have applied for, and meet the entry requirements of, a graduate research degree (Masters by Research or PhD) at Melbourne, or be currently enrolled in one.
  • Stipend scholarships go to the candidates ranked highest by selection panels, based on prior academic results and research potential.
  • About 600 scholarships are offered.
  • Awards are subject to the Graduate Research Scholarships Terms and Conditions.

International applicants are automatically considered when they apply by the advertised scholarship deadline. Stipend awards also include limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.

How to apply

  1. Find a graduate research course and a potential supervisor.
  2. Apply for the course by its application closing date (shown on the course's 'How to apply' tab).
  3. You are considered for the scholarship automatically; within ten business days a scholarship application is added to your record.
  4. Offers for stipend scholarships come around the same time as course offers.
  5. If you defer or are already enrolled, follow the faculty-specific reconsideration process on the Graduate Research Scholarship Applications page.
