MIT Need-Based Financial Aid for International Undergraduates

MIT is one of the very few US universities that is need-blind and meets full need for all undergraduates, domestic and international. Aid comes as MIT Scholarships (grants) based only on financial need.

What it covers

  • MIT Scholarship (grant) meeting 100% of demonstrated need
  • Families earning under USD 200,000 typically attend tuition-free; under USD 100,000, parents are typically expected to pay nothing
  • USD 2,000 First Year Grant for highest-need first-year students
  • MIT Student Health Insurance Plan covered for highest-need students

Who can apply

  • MIT is need-blind in admissions and meets 100% of demonstrated need for all undergraduates, including international students.
  • You are 'international' for aid purposes if you are not eligible for US federal aid, which applies to Pakistani citizens.
  • Aid is purely need-based. All aid applicants are considered for an MIT Scholarship automatically.
  • Students are still expected to contribute from summer savings and term-time work. Outside scholarships can offset this.
  • You must first be admitted to MIT as an undergraduate.

How to apply

  1. Apply to MIT (Early Action or Regular Action).
  2. Complete the CSS Profile, listing MIT (code 3514) and answering MIT's supplemental questions.
  3. Upload your parents' Pakistani tax returns or income documents (with English translation) to the College Board's IDOC service.
  4. Submit by 30 November (Early Action) or 15 February (Regular Action).
  5. Offers are released mid-January (EA) or mid-March (RA).

  • Parents' tax returns or income documentation via IDOC (English translation; self-translation accepted)
  • Both parents' documents if separated/divorced
