DAAD Research Grants - Doctoral Programmes in Germany

This DAAD programme funds a full doctorate in Germany, either an individual PhD with a supervisor or a structured doctoral programme. Pakistani applicants apply through the DAAD portal for their country's deadline.

Deadline: Closed for this round; the deadline for Pakistani applicants was 31 August 2026 (for funding starting in 2027). Applications usually open on 1 June each year.

What it covers

  • Monthly payment of €1,400
  • Health, accident and personal liability insurance contributions
  • Annual research allowance of €460
  • Monthly rent subsidy and family allowances, where applicable
  • German language course support (online and pre-course) and reimbursement of TestDaF/DSH fee
  • Funding for up to four years (initially three, extendable)

Who can apply

  • Above-average results and a completed master's degree (or, exceptionally, a bachelor's) by the time funding starts.
  • Your latest degree must be no more than six years old at the application deadline.
  • If you have already started a doctorate, it must have begun no more than three years ago.
  • You must not have lived in Germany for more than 15 months at the deadline.
  • Supervision confirmed by a German professor, or contact with a structured doctoral programme.
  • Knowledge of the working language of the project.

How to apply

  1. Find a supervisor or structured doctoral programme in Germany and get written confirmation.
  2. Register on the DAAD portal between 1 June and the Pakistan deadline.
  3. Request the recommendation form online and ask a referee to upload it.
  4. Fill in the online form, upload all documents as PDFs, and submit.
  5. Results usually come a few months after the deadline.
