MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship - Research Students (Embassy Recommendation)

MEXT research scholarships fund Pakistani graduates for master's or doctoral study at Japanese universities, usually starting as a research student. The Embassy of Japan in Islamabad handles the first round of selection.

Who can apply

  • Pakistani nationals who are university graduates with 16 or 18 years of education.
  • Under 35 years of age (MEXT rule for research students).
  • Eligible for admission to a master's or doctoral programme at a Japanese graduate school.
  • Shortlisted candidates take a written test and an interview at the Embassy.

Other routes: besides Embassy recommendation, many Pakistani students win MEXT scholarships through university recommendation, by applying directly to a Japanese university that nominates them.

How to apply

  1. Download the guideline, application form and forms from Study in Japan (MEXT research students section).
  2. Prepare a research plan and gather attested documents.
  3. Submit to the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan by the deadline.
  4. Shortlisted candidates are called for a test and interview.
  5. Recommended candidates go on to university placement and MEXT's final selection.
