McGill University Entrance Scholarships (One-year and Major)

McGill offers merit-based entrance scholarships to first-time university students starting a full-time undergraduate degree, including students applying from schools outside Canada. One-year awards are given automatically; Major Entrance Scholarships need a separate application and are renewable.

What it covers

  • One-year entrance scholarship of CAD 3,000 (non-renewable)
  • Major Entrance Scholarships of CAD 3,000, 5,000 or 10,000 per year, renewable up to 4 years (CAD 12,000 level is only for Canadians/PRs)
  • Guaranteed choice of residence building for September entrants who apply on time
  • Priority course registration in first year

Who can apply

Open to first-time university students entering a full-time undergraduate degree, including applicants from schools outside Canada such as Pakistan.

  • You must meet McGill's minimum academic requirements for entrance scholarships.
  • Transfer, mature, diploma, exchange, special, part-time and visiting students are not eligible.
  • Major scholarships are judged first on academic excellence and then on demonstrated leadership in school or community.
  • The top CAD 12,000 award is limited to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
  • Finalists may be interviewed.

Students who apply for a Major award but do not get one are automatically considered for the one-year award. Scholarship holders entering in September are guaranteed a residence place if they apply by the housing deadline.

How to apply

  1. Apply for undergraduate admission to McGill and upload all grades.
  2. From 1 October, open the Major Entrance Scholarship application in the Undergraduate Admissions Applicant Portal.
  3. Complete your activity list, essay and self-written third-person reference.
  4. Ask two referees (one academic, one activity-related) to upload letters on the portal.
  5. Submit by the deadline for schools outside Canada (21 January).
  6. Watch your applicant portal and email; only students who receive offers are notified, and finalists may be invited to an interview.

  • One-page self-written letter of reference in the third person
  • Two letters of reference (academic and activity-related)
  • Signed class-rank statement from your school (if available)
  • All grades and interim grades
