Pakistani Passport: New and Renewal Fees, Documents and Online Renewal (DGIP)

Travel · Checked October 9, 2026 against the official source

The Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP) issues Pakistani Machine Readable Passports (MRP) and e-Passports. You need a valid passport for any study, work or travel abroad, and DGIP also lets you renew an expiring passport online.

Processing timeMRP after successful processing: Normal 21 working days, Urgent 5 working days, Fast Track 2 working days (a DGIP note says 4 working days since 03-02-2023). Courier time to remote areas and missions abroad is extra.
Where to applyIn person at Regional Passport Offices (NADRA-run Executive Passport Offices / Passport Processing Counters charge extra service fees) or Pakistan Missions abroad; renewals online at onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk.

Step by step

  1. Pay the passport fee first: deposit it at a designated National Bank branch using the DGIP challan, or pay online through the Passport Fee Asaan e-payment service (keep the receipt / PSID confirmation).
  2. Visit your Regional Passport Office (RPO) or, abroad, the Pakistan Mission with your original CNIC/NICOP (and previous passport, if any).
  3. At the office: arrival at the customer service counter, photograph and token with QR code, fingerprints, data entry, verification against office record, then interview and decision by the Assistant Director.
  4. Choose Normal, Urgent or Fast Track (MRP only, in selected cities) priority according to the fee you paid.
  5. Collect your passport from the office where you applied, or receive it at home if you chose home delivery. You get an SMS/email when it is dispatched.
  6. Online renewal: if your MRP has expired or has less than 1 year validity and your particulars are unchanged, create an account on the DGIP Online Passport portal (onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk), fill in the application, upload photo and supporting documents, pay by credit/debit card, and track status by email. DGIP headquarters reviews the application and the passport is couriered to you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew my passport before it expires?

Yes. Under the Passport & Visa Manual 2006 there is no restriction on renewing before expiry, and you get full 5 or 10 year validity. The office may ask for a short statement explaining why you need a new passport early. The online portal, however, accepts renewals only when the passport has expired or has under one year left.

Can children get a 10-year passport?

No. DGIP issues children under 15 a passport with 5 years validity only, so pay the 5-year fee for them. Children also need a CRC (B-Form), Juvenile Card or FRC depending on age, plus both parents' CNICs or passports, and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

What happens if I lose my passport?

Lodge a police report mentioning the lost passport number and apply again. DGIP charges double the normal fee on the first loss and four times the fee on the second loss. Third-time loss cases are referred to DGIP headquarters in Islamabad for approval.

Is Fast Track available for e-Passports?

No. DGIP states that Fast Track service is only for Machine Readable Passports. e-Passports are available in Normal and Urgent categories from all passport field offices in Pakistan since August 2023, at higher fees than the MRP.

Fees and procedures change. This guide summarises the official information; confirm on the official page before you pay or apply. Never pay agents who claim to "speed up" official attestation.
