Questions

How is federal government pension calculated?

Gross pension is worked out from your average pensionable emoluments over the last 24 months of service (from 1 January 2025) and your qualifying service. The standard rule gives 7/300 of the average for each year of service, which is 70% at the maximum of 30 years.

What is the penalty for voluntary retirement?

Voluntary retirement is allowed after 25 years of qualifying service. Pension is reduced by 3% of gross pension for each year before the normal retirement age, up to a maximum of 20%.

How much is family pension?

For deaths on or after 10 September 2024, family pension is 75% of the pension the pensioner was drawing. After the spouse, other family members receive it for up to 10 years (disabled children for life, and children until 21 or for 10 years, whichever is later).

Did pensions increase in 2026?

Yes. The Finance Division allowed a 7% increase from 1 July 2026 on the baseline pension, after 7% from 1 July 2025. Increases are added to the baseline as separate amounts.

What about employees appointed after July 2024?

Federal civil employees appointed on or after 1 July 2024 are in the contributory pension scheme: the employee contributes 10% and the government 12% of running basic pay to a pension fund.
